On Saturday’s group walk in the Black Mountains [you’ll see photos from that, soon], I received a bit of interest in my Leki walking poles, on top of which I recently added the photo adapter attachment.

This is designed for Leki walking poles with the Aergon grip design and I felt it would be timely to write about it.

I purchased it online from Amazon and it arrived within a couple of days. Despite my concerns, this is a genuine Leki product; complete with the packaging, visual instruction and all tools and accessories required in order to fit it.

In case it’s not clear elsewhere, the photo adapter kit is designed to replace the branded portion on top of the walking pole. You’re basically replacing it with a part that fits like-for-like, but has a thread cut in to it for mounting the thumbscrew accessory.

That red tool in the packaging is used to remove the pin through the side of the handle. You could probably use a thin nail or screwdriver, if it came to it. For me, this was the most challenging part of the installation.

My walking poles are the Leki Sherpa XL. I’ve owned and have been using them for a year now and I have no regrets whatsoever on buying them.

I cannot guarantee that the photo adapter will work with other poles. But I wouldn’t buy it unless you poles have Leki’s Aergon Grip handles.

So, in to the top of the pole goes a threaded piece with a red thumbscrew housed inside. I apologise for my lack of photos, although you can see it in the first image of packaging. The thumbscrew allows you to secure the camera (it’s a common thread; ¼in, I think).

When not required, you can remove the camera and leave the adapter in place. Or, if desired the adapter can be unscrewed as one with the camera. A plastic cap is provided to plug and protect the hole when not in use (again, I apologise for my lack of photos).

I’ve been using this setup on recent walks. For on-the-go photography and also for stationary shots, with the walking pole used as a monopod.

It is such a great idea. In this modern world with everyone owning some form of camera (whether it’s an action cam or smartphone), I’m surprised that few other manufacturers seem to have replicated this thought.
