#walk1000miles – December 2019

As I’ve mentioned before, this will be my final entry in to a long-running series of #walk1000miles records. I think I’ve partaken in the challenge for four years now and I know that I’ve completed it twice, while this will be the second year where I’ve missed out by less than half a Century.

From the end of January 2020, I’ll merely be recording and reflecting upon my mileage with no relation to the challenge.

01/12 – 10 miles – Burrington Combe to Cheddar Gorge (Weston-super-Walkers)
09/12 – 9.5 miles – Axbridge to Crook Peak
22/12 – 8.5 miles – A Priddy Good Walk (Weston-super-Walkers)
29/12 – 9.5 miles – Sheppey Straggle (Brunel Walking Group)
31/12 – Sugar Loaf on NYE (Brunel Walking Group)
Total for December 2019 = 41.5 miles

In November, I started my own walking group on Meetup, with a view to meeting and walking with people who are closer to my home, where I’d previously travel up in to Bristol and then on to a walk; or just head out alone. Membership has grown rapidly and I was able to host two walks in the month of December – both of which were well received.

Before the year ended, I was able to squeeze in another walk for Brunel; the Ramblers group in Bristol that I’ve been dedicated to for over seven years. That, I believe, was my seventh (if not eighth) walk of the year. A personal record! Again, it went well.

Normally, I would look to get a few extra walks in at this time of year. But I decided to allow myself to work a portion of the Christmas break and that left me with fewer opportunities.

For the first time since, perhaps, 2016, I decided to be a bit social and head out for New Year’s Eve. Last year, I was in bed well before midnight. This year, I climbed to the heights of Sugar Loaf in the Brecon Beacons with twenty-four others… And saw the new year mist roll in!

In the past, we’ve covered Glastonbury Tor, Pen y Fan and Worcestershire Beacon… I wonder where we might be headed this year?

Several weeks and months of mud (and probably rain) must be contended with before we can think about the dry, warm weather again. Challenge of no challenge, I intend to keep active throughout.

In December 2018, I’d walked almost a hundred miles and found myself close to a century beyond my target for the year.

Total for 2019 = 966 miles walked

Thanks for reading.
