Monthly Miles: February 2020

Just like that, we’re one-sixth of the way in to 2020! March has arrived and soon – we all hope, after repeated weekends of storm weather – spring will soon be on the way!

02/02 – 9.5 miles – Congresbury to Goblin Combe (Weston-super-Walkers)
14/02 – 10.75 miles – Mendip Hills
17/02 – 8.5 miles – Clevedon Coastal Walk
23/02 – 8 miles – Tickenham Moor and Cadbury Camp (W-s-W)

Total for February 2020 = 36.75 miles

From Storm Ciara, to Storm Dennis and the month wouldn’t pass before Storm Jorge arrived (I’m not sure what happened to storms E to I). In some ways, I’ve been fortunate in that I don’t work Mondays and have been able to take advantage of less-wet-but-still-very-windy days, while the storm weather has called a halt to a number of Sunday plans.

I’m pleased in that I’ve been able to organise and lead two events with my Weston-super-Walkers group. This has been the average, since I started the group on Meetup, back in November. Membership is slowly increasing, week-by-week, as our average attendance recently hit the record-high of a full dozen walkers (plus two dogs).

What is surprising to note, is that I’ve not done a single walk with Brunel Walking Group. Neither have I been out with any friends, as I might have done in the past. I aim to get back out with Brunel in March. Commitments to two walking groups places a lot of demand on my Sundays (thankfully, I’m not religious).

I managed to do a couple of walks on my own. Both quite local to home and lending me a chance to experiment with my new action camera. For several weeks now, I’ve been wanting to head down to Exmoor and repeat a walk from last year; or over the Brecon Beacons and to visit a few hills I’ve not fully explored… But those recurring storms blew those plans away.

I’m almost up to one hundred miles for the year so far. I know that will increase more substantially as the daylight hours increase. But I’m pleased to be hovering around an average of fifty miles per month, which is what I’d always imagined I would achieve quite naturally and without the pressure of needing to hit an annual target.

Spring is on the way! Hopefully those storms are all behind us, the wind will soon die down and that portions of the UK can begin to dry out and recover.

Current total for 2020 = 89.25 miles

Thanks for reading.
