This would be only my second ever walk in the Blackdown Hills AoNB. Both walks have been events led and created by Brunel Walking Group, where I have simply followed along and observed… Even though I probably live closer to this portion of Somerset than ninety-nine per cent of our club’s membership!
A chance to bag a trig, reach the highest point and explore paths that I would otherwise ignore. I made the drive down solo, straight from my home in Weston-super-Mare.
After two days of walking in the snow, you might think I’d have had enough of the white stuff and sub-zero temperatures. But my biggest adventure was yet to come, with a visit to the Mendip Hills. I’d been asked about leading a walk as part of our walking group’s annual ‘Mini Walking Festival’. This takes place towards the end of June every year, on a Saturday and it just so happens that we will be heading south to the Quantock Hills next month.
Easter Sunday. A day when many might be stuck indoors eating chocolate eggs… Believe me, I could’ve easily done the same, if only I hadn’t celebrated a birthday the day before and following an absolute downpour of a Good Bad Friday.
Weather-wise, this had promised to be the only reasonable chance of walking over the four-day weekend. To keep it close to home wasn’t appealing and so, I embarked on the eighty-minute drive east across Somerset to arrive at Cranborne Chase.
