Two Lochs from Aviemore

We’d arrived in Scotland the day before and checked in to the youth hostel in Aviemore. For a few of us within the group, this was our first ever trip north of Hadrian’s Wall.

We’d planned to be up on the mountains and Munros. But the weather had other ideas; with 60-70mph gusts forecast for the summits and still a good 40mph berating us lower down.

My One Welsh Walk

A circular walk in the Brecon Beacons/Black Mountains. Introducing two friends to Sugar Loaf for the first time.

In a year that has deprived many of us from so much, I can say that I have only made the journey over to Wales for a walk just the one time. Now that Wales is in its own state of lockdown (for the third time this year), I won’t be crossing the Severn again until sometime in 2021 (fingers crossed).

I do miss the Brecon Beacons. Snowdonia. The Black Mountains and all those miles of the Wales Coast Path I’ve still yet to follow. I’d been up Sugar Loaf several times before but I thought it might be good to write about this most recent outing, as I got to share it with two friends who were new to the almost-mountain.

First Walk with the Montane Yupik 50

Seven-days before ahead of the start of my South Downs Way journey, I loaded up my new fifty litre rucksack and heading up in to the Mendip Hills for a day walk. This would be my first outing with the Montane Yupik 50. An opportunity to see it it really fits and how comfortable I would be, carrying my current load.
